POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title:  Planned Giving/Major Gifts Officer

Department:  Development

Reports to:  Director of Development

Function: Responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gifts. The officer will have an assigned group of approximately 300 major gift prospects and program responsibility for conducting individual visits with gift planning prospects and small presentations in areas where there are a substantial number of supporters. Work closely with other Development staff and committee volunteers.

Among the duties assigned to this position are the following:

1. Plan, direct and carry out the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and prospects for planned gifts and major gifts.

2. Manage the growth of the Cathedral Founders Society including all materials describing the program and gift opportunities.

3. Develop plans and procedures to work with the Office of the Treasurer and outside counsel on the establishment of gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts. Review trust documents with tax counsel and prepare gift-planning presentations to support visits to donor prospects.

4. Manage the Planned Giving committee including the identification and recruitment of appropriate leadership.

5. Cultivate and solicit major gifts including writing to individual prospects.

6. Develop and implement strategies for donor solicitation.

7. Work with the assistance of the Director of Development to arrange for clergy and senior staff to speak on behalf of the Cathedral as preliminary way of meeting new prospects.

8. Identify strategies for appropriate solicitations and participate in staff meetings to report progress on those solicitations.

Qualifications required for this position include the following:

1. Proven track record of successful solicitation of major gifts including planned gifts.

2. At least six years experience in the development field, preferable in a non-profit.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

4. High level of initiative, attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.

5. Willingness to travel.

6. Administrative background including campaign and gift planning experience.

7. Familiarity with word processing (e.g. Microsoft Word) and spreadsheet skills (Excel) and

8. Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge preferred.
