EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

This position is the top development job for one of the nation's leading education programs. The College of Education is ranked 22 by U.S. News & World Report with 7 programs ranked in the top 10. The College’s faculty conducts a wide range of research and among its graduates are leaders in elementary, secondary, and higher education, and in diverse professional positions in the fields of human development, counseling, educational policy, government, and business. Edna Mora Szymanski, Dean of the College, has developed plans that support the College’s momentum and will improve its standing in several critical areas. The College of Education is on the move.

The Position 

Reports jointly to the Dean of the College of Education and the Executive Director for Development/ Campaign Director for the University. It is the chief development officer for the College of Education. 

Plans, coordinates, and oversees the development and alumni relations activities of the College. Creates strategies for annual and capital development, alumni relations, and development communications, including setting goals in consultation with the Dean and the University’s Campaign Director.  

Manages an office that includes the Assistant Dean, Development and the Director of Alumni Relations. Work as a peer with the Assistant Dean, External Relations for the School on all development communications.  

Secures principal and major gifts. Manages a portfolio of 100 principal and major gift prospects including individuals, corporations, and foundations.

 

Qualifications

 The Ideal Candidate should have: 

·         A Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred. 

·         Seven or more years successful development experience, with at least five in major gifts; track record of working with high-level donors and prospects and closing six- and seven-figure gifts. 

·         Supervisory experience. 

·         Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage and motivate individuals at all levels including staff, alumni, and volunteers. 

·         Excellent writing, editorial, and interpersonal communication skills.  

·         Ability to lead by example and competence. 

·         Appreciation for and familiarity with the role of a public research university.  

·         An ability to work collaboratively with representatives of other university departments and a multi-faceted University Relations program.

The Ideal Candidate should be: 

·         Passionate about the field of education and experienced in fundraising. 

·         A collaborative professional who will be a productive member of the team.  

·         Able to articulate the Dean’s objectives and to make the case for the College by expressing the importance of education for the future of the State and the nation.  

Critical Issues 

·         This is a new position with management responsibility for the College’s development department.  

·         The philanthropic potential of the College’s alumni and friends needs to be developed further. The College has many good prospects with little giving history. 

·         The College’s successful participation in the capital campaign is crucially important.

 

Additional Information

 The president, C. D. (Dan) Mote, comes from the leading public university, the University of California at Berkeley, and is committed to increasing Maryland’s standings in all areas. His broad experience and successful tenure at UC Berkeley is his greatest asset for leading the University of Maryland. Prior to assuming the Presidency at Maryland in 1998, Dr. Mote served on the University of California, Berkeley faculty for 31 years. From 1991 to 1998, he was Vice Chancellor and held an endowed chair in Mechanical Systems and was President of the UC Berkeley Foundation. He led a comprehensive capital campaign that raised $1.4 billion. He earlier served as chair of the department of Mechanical Engineering and led the department to its number one ranking in the National Research Council review of graduate program effectiveness.  

College Park is the flagship campus in the University of Maryland System.  It is one of the nation’s premier public research universities.  Founded in 1856, the University is strategically located 9 miles from Washington, D.C. and 30 miles from Baltimore.  The University is one of only 62 institutions with membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities.  Thirty-one University programs are ranked in the top 10 nationally and 76 programs are ranked in the top 25. 

The University’s continued progress will depend significantly on increased philanthropic support. The University completed a $476 million fundraising campaign two years ago and has just launched the “silent phase” of a new campaign. The planning goal of this comprehensive, seven-year drive is $800 million.
