
EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
This position is the top development job for one of the nation's leading education
programs. The College of Education is ranked 22 by U.S. News & World Report
with 7 programs ranked in the top 10. The Colleges faculty conducts a wide range of
research and among its graduates are leaders in elementary, secondary, and higher
education, and in diverse professional positions in the fields of human development,
counseling, educational policy, government, and business. Edna Mora Szymanski, Dean of the
College, has developed plans that support the Colleges momentum and will improve its
standing in several critical areas. The College of Education is on the move.

College to promote the interests of education to national corporate and business
executives, state leadership, and the people of the State of Maryland.

· The Executive Director of Development will take a leadership role in the University-wide capital campaign.
The
Position
Reports
jointly to the Dean of the
Plans,
coordinates, and oversees the development and alumni relations activities of the College.
Creates strategies for annual and capital development, alumni relations, and development
communications, including setting goals in consultation with the Dean and the
Universitys Campaign Director.
Manages
an office that includes the Assistant Dean, Development and the Director of Alumni
Relations. Work as a peer with the Assistant Dean, External Relations for the School on
all development communications.
Secures
principal and major gifts. Manages a portfolio of 100 principal and major gift prospects
including individuals, corporations, and foundations.
Qualifications
·
A
Bachelors degree is required; Masters degree is preferred.
·
Seven
or more years successful development experience, with at least five in major gifts; track
record of working with high-level donors and prospects and closing six- and seven-figure
gifts.
·
Supervisory experience.
·
Strong
interpersonal skills and ability to engage and motivate individuals at all levels
including staff, alumni, and volunteers.
·
Excellent
writing, editorial, and interpersonal communication skills.
·
Ability
to lead by example and competence.
·
Appreciation
for and familiarity with the role of a public research university.
·
An
ability to work collaboratively with representatives of other university departments and a
multi-faceted University Relations program.

of education and experienced in fundraising.

A collaborative
professional who will be a productive member of the team.

Able to articulate the
Deans objectives and to make the case for the College by expressing the importance
of education for the future of the State and the nation.
Critical Issues
·
This is a new position
with management responsibility for the Colleges development department.
·
The philanthropic
potential of the Colleges alumni and friends needs to be developed further. The
College has many good prospects with little giving history.
· The Colleges successful participation in the capital campaign is crucially important.
Additional Information
The
Universitys continued progress will depend significantly on increased philanthropic
support. The University completed a $476 million fundraising campaign two years ago and
has just launched the silent phase of a new campaign. The planning goal of
this comprehensive, seven-year drive is $800 million.
