Background

The current Executive Vice President is retiring at the end of 2001 after twenty years of service, the last six in this position.

The assets of The Pensions Boards at the end of 2000 were about $2.5 billion. Its annual operating budget of $l8 million is used to manage Annuity Fund and other investments and various benefit programs used for about 20,000 ministers and lay workers. The total staff is about 95.

Besides annuity benefits, the Pension Boards also provides medical, dental, life and disability benefit coverages for all church employees, as well as welfare benefits for ordained clergy.

The Position

The Executive Vice President reports to the Board of Trustees and Directors, which oversees the general policies and performance of the Pension Boards. Those individuals reporting directly to the Executive Vice President are responsible for Investments, Administration, Treasury, Member Services, Information Technology and Ministerial Assistance

Major Responsibilities:

Accountable for the development, management and performance and communication for all of the pension, insurance and welfare programs of the Pension Boards.

Develop, implement and administer the policies of the Pension Boards.

Strive for good, long-term performance and return on investments for Pension Boards funds to achieve optimum benefits for Pension Board members. The investment philosophy needs to balance maximum growth and income with corporate social responsibility.

Develop and administer pension, life, dental, health and medical benefit plans to provide members with the highest benefits available through contributions paid on their behalf

Ensure clear, accurate and effective communication of all programs to everyone throughout the United Church of Christ through publications, seminars, workshops and electronic mediums.

Participate with other Church recognized organizations in the joint effort to monitor and influence the social impact of corporations whose stocks are held by one or more of these organizations.

Represent the Pension Boards at the United Church of Christ Executive Council, General Synod.

Serves as Secretary of the United Church Foundation.
