Parents Television Council (PTC)

Los Angeles, California

 The Situation

The Parents Television Council is the Hollywood project of the Media Research Center (MRC); a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and education foundation, based in Alexandria, Virginia. Founded by L. Brent Bozell III in 1987, with the mission of bringing political balance to the nation’s news media and responsibility to the entertainment media, the MRC has grown into the nation’s largest and most respected conservative media watchdog organization. For additional information about Brent Bozell, visit: www.latspeakers.com/bozell.

PTC is the only organization dedicated solely to improving the content of entertainment programming, with emphasis on prime time television. The PTC analyzes every prime time entertainment program on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, PaxTV, UPN, and the WB network. Over the years, the PTC’s has recorded and monitored more than 70,000 hours of entertainment programming.

The PTC has organized a star-studded group of entertainment industry leaders to serve as members of the organization’s Advisory Board. Using scientific analysis generated from the PTC’s computerized database of entertainment show content, the PTC publishes special reports focusing on a variety of topics relating to the content of prime time television -- including in-depth analyses of the "family hour" and the television ratings system.

The online "Family Guide to Prime Time Television" provides a daily grid of prime time shows with a written assessment of each program as well as an easy "traffic light" rating system (red, yellow, and green) to signal a show’s suitability for children, based on language, violence and sexual situations. For more information about PTC and MRC, go to www.parentstv.org and www.mediaresearch.org.
