POSITION SPECIFICATION
Project Interchange
Washington Chapter
Washington, D.C.
Director of Development
________________________________________________________________________
The Situation
Project Interchange, an institute of the American Jewish Committee, is the only national organization solely dedicated to providing travel seminars in Israel for America's political, civic, ethnic and religious leaders. Founded in 1982, Project Interchange educates American policy makers and opinion leaders through firsthand experience about Israel and the Middle East peace process. Project Interchange's specially-designed seminar programs strengthen relations between the U.S. and Israel, promote mutually beneficial ties between influential Americans and Israelis, and enhance intergroup relations in the United States.
The budget is about $1.1 million.
Attractions
Move from events fund raising to major and planned gift fund raising.
The executive director, Carole Freeman-Stern, has an excellent background in Jewish and international affairs. She has served as special assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk, the administrative assistant for Congressman Howard Berman, and the special assistant to the Chairman at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. She also served at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and the Center for Jewish Studies at UCLA.

Special events have been the mainstay of the development program. The Chapter needs to build on its past success and move in to cultivating donors for major gifts. This approach will require some strategic planning and initiatives.
There is a need to develop more lay leaders who are willing to play a stronger role in the fundraising campaigns.
The AJC will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2006. An endowment campaign to coincide with the anniversary will be a minor responsibility of the next director of development.
